ABOUT ABSENCE

What is the Bradford Factor?

The Bradford Factor is a metric for identifying employees who take frequent short-term absence. It is a key tool for HR in an absence reduction strategy, and is used to monitor trends in sickness absence, to provide trigger points for management action, and for comparison with overall absence rates.

The basic formula for calculating the Bradford ‘score’ is:

Bradford score = S2 x D

Where:

S = the number of spells of absence in a specified period

D = the number of days (or hours) of absence in that period

How Absencecare helps companies implement the Bradford Factor

Absencecare provides a managed service for organisations aiming to measure their Bradford scores and reduce absence. Absencecare collates absence data and provides automated electronic notifications to line and HR managers of Bradford Factor levels. Additionally, the system will produce regular reports and dashboards for management review throughout the year.

Further information about the Bradford Factor is provided in Absencecare’s piece ‘How embedding, measuring and monitoring the Bradford Factor can help you reduce absence’. A copy can be obtain by emailing enquiries@absencecare.co.uk.
